Granada Geopark: a unique territory

Discover with us one of Europe’s most unique landscapes, where nature, history, and culture converge to offer an unforgettable experience.

The Granada Geopark—recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark on July 10, 2020—is an exceptional territory located in the eastern part of the province of Granada. Spanning 4,722 km² and encompassing 47 municipalities, it covers the regions of Guadix, Baza, Huéscar, and Los Montes. Together, they form a unique landscape where geology has shaped the lives of its inhabitants from prehistoric times to the present day.

Framed by major natural landmarks such as the Sierra Nevada and La Sagra, this territory is striking for its contrasts, its geological formations, its historic towns, and its distinctive ways of inhabiting the landscape.

At Cuevas La Atalaya, we invite you to discover the essence of the Granada Highlands (Altiplano de Granada) and to enjoy a stay in complete harmony with your surroundings.

An ancient landscape

The Granada Geopark is a true open-air natural museum, where high plateaus, ravines, canyons, and badland landscapes reveal millions of years of geological history. Its rocks and landforms preserve the traces of ancient lakes, sedimentation, and erosion—processes that have shaped an environment of great scientific and scenic value.

Geology has also shaped the lives and culture of the local inhabitants, influencing both their settlements and their traditional activities. Exploring the Geopark means discovering a unique territory, where every valley, mountain, and geological formation tells a part of our planet’s history.

Nature, heritage, and culture

The Granada Geopark is a territory where nature, archaeology, traditional architecture, gastronomy, and ancestral traditions coexist in perfect harmony. Its villages retain a unique identity, closely linked to the landscape and reflected in their earth-sheltered dwellings—homes carved directly into the ground—and their traditional ways of life.

This natural and cultural heritage makes the Geopark an ideal destination for discovering an authentic and distinct side of Andalusia—far removed from conventional tourist circuits and rich in history, traditions, and hidden corners waiting to be explored.
